What do bottle caps, old sandals, plastic bottles, and rusty cans have in common? Well — if you ask the incredible Nzilani, they’re not trash. They’re treasures waiting to be transformed! Nzilani, a creative powerhouse and upcycling artist from Nairobi, spent two wonderful weeks with us at Eco Moyo, leading hands-on workshops that turned our learners into young eco-visionaries. Together, they cut, glued, painted, imagined — and reimagined — what “waste” could become. Instead of throwing things away, the children reimagined them. Broken sandals and rusty cans became building materials for miniature houses. Hundreds of plastic bottle caps were sorted by color and pattern, then arranged into vibrant artworks and mosaics. Together, the students even created a map of Eco Moyo out of recycled pieces — a playful, yet powerful reminder that our school is built on creativity and care for the environment.
“I’ve taught many children about upcycling, and most of them are not really interested. It’s usually the school, parents, or organizations pushing them to learn. But Eco Moyo children are different — they are very willing, involved, kind and truly passionate.” – Nzilani
We’re so grateful to Nzilani for her energy, artistry, and heart — and we have no intention of making this a one-time thing. This is just the beginning of a creative, sustainable journey… and we’re all in.
