Our unique primary school

Located just 2 hours north of Mombasa, Eco Moyo is a vibrant, private primary school dedicated to providing quality education in a safe and supportive environment for underprivileged children.

Our school is so secluded in the bush our visitors are shocked. All of a sudden, these incredible buildings appear, with bright colours and modern design. Kids playing, surrounded by lush trees and the sound of birds. No traffic or noise. People are just blown away. And with reason. It’s a magical place.

A safe and caring environment

In Kenyan schools, class sizes often range from 50-120 students. At Eco Moyo, we limit classes to a maximum of 25 students to ensure quality education, a caring environment and that every child is truly seen and supported.

In a community affected by poverty, where challenges like alcoholism, abuse and teenage pregnancies are common, we aim to be a safe haven for children.

Free school uniforms and materials

The costs of uniforms, materials and school fees can prevent children from attending school simply because their families can’t afford them. At Eco Moyo, we remove this barrier so that children have the opportunity to learn.

The only “school fee” our parents are paying is to help is collect firewood for the school kitchen three times a year.

Nutritious breakfast and lunch

We provide breakfast and lunch every day to both our students and staff. For some students, these meals can be the only food they get throughout the day, making them essential for their health and learning.

Having meals at school means students don’t have to go home to uncertain meals or spend the whole day hungry.

Extracurricular clubs and activities

At Eco Moyo, our extracurricular clubs are an important part of the education. They offer students opportunities to grow personally and develop essential skills beyond the classroom.

Through activities like football, taekwondo, arts and crafts, agriculture-computer- and English clubs, our students learn teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while exploring their passions, building confidence and developing a positive self-image.

How Eco Moyo is different

Although Kenya implemented a free education policy in 2003, there are many hidden costs which makes attending school difficult for children from low-income families. Eco Moyo is a private primary school - without any fees. This is a table of examples of costs in schools around our area.

Dzunguni Village
- a Giriama community

Dzunguni is home to around 90 families, most of whom face significant challenges due to poverty.

Many parents have never had the opportunity to go to school and their livelihoods depend largely on farming, which is very weather-dependent. Without access to electricity or running water, life can be difficult, especially during dry spells when crops fail.

To make ends meet, many parents are forced to leave the village in search of work, often leaving their children with relatives or grandparents. Despite these hardships, the people of Dzunguni are incredibly resilient. They remain committed to finding ways to improve their lives and provide better opportunities for their children.

Dzunguni is a beautiful village, surrounded by nature, but the challenges connected to poverty are undeniable. Eco Moyo is the only school in the village, and for many children, it is their only opportunity for education. Through Eco Moyo, children in Dzunguni are given the chance to break the cycle of poverty and reach for a brighter future.

Kilifi County

Eco Moyo Education Centre is located 45 minutes away from Kilifi town, in a rural area of Kilifi County. Kilifi County, situated along the Kenyan coast, is known for its beautiful beaches, rich cultural heritage, and unique landscapes. However, it is also one of the poorest counties in Kenya, with significant challenges in accessing basic services such as clean water, healthcare, and education. The county's economy is largely dependent on agriculture, particularly rain-fed farming, which makes it vulnerable to climate variability.

Kilifi town itself is more urbanized compared to the rest of the county. Still, much of the surrounding rural areas, like where Eco Moyo is located, face limited infrastructure, with many families living in poverty and struggling with unemployment.

Culturally, Kilifi is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including the Mijikenda people, who are made up of several sub-tribes, such as the Giriama.   The Giriama people, part of the larger Mijikenda group, have a rich history and a deep connection to the land. Living in small coastal villages, their traditions and strong sense of community are central to their way of life. Family values are at the heart of everything they do. Despite facing challenges such as high illiteracy rates and limited access to education, the Giriama remain resilient and continue to persevere through adversity.

In 2025 there are 200 children attending Eco Moyo

  • On average our classes have 25 students per teacher.

  • All our students live within the geographical boundaries of Dzunguni Village.

  • Our youngest students in PP1 (pre-primary 1) are only 4-5 years old when they start school.

  • Coming from families who most often only speak their tribe language Giriama - they start learning both Swahili and English straight away.

Continuous support for former students through Junior Secondary school.

This year, thanks to a generous sponsor, we’ve started supporting our former students as they continue their education in junior secondary (class 7-9). We work with local schools in the area and cover all costs for our former Eco Moyo students, including school fees, admission fees, exam fees and school uniforms. For schools that offer lunch, we provide this as well.

Since class 7-9 are no longer a part of primary education, the fees are generally higher. We’ve seen that some of our graduates couldn’t continue to junior secondary due to financial challenges, so this support plays a key role in helping them move forward in their education.

A safe and caring environment

Unlike overcrowded classrooms with up to 120 students, our classes are limited to 25 students. This allow us to build personal connections with each child, providing the support and attention they need.

Eco Moyo is a safe and caring space for children in a community affected by poverty, with challenges like alcoholism, abuse and teenage pregnancies.
