March recap pt 1!

Our International Women’s Day was cut a little short due to rain: cultivating the land has of course highest priority, but we had a very successful workshop of making reusable pads!

Our Chess team made it all the way from Kilifi to Nairobi!!!!! Holy crap - this is so big and had some drama to it, that we wrote a blogpost about, you can read more on our website!

The swimming classes have continued, to see the students going from being afraid of the water to run and jump in feeling confident has been everything we wanted and more 😍

We put some more names on our Wall of Gratitude 🥰

And we recreated a picture from 2020: Issah & Alex on the bench in PP2 and now in grade 6 🤩

This years World Day of Happiness 🥰🩷

The happiness tree is up, and what makes our students happy are things like eating, playing, dancing and reading - all things we do here at Eco Moyo. 🥰
(And joking and making noise 😂)

Thanks to everyone supporting us, together we spread happiness and make a real difference 🩷🧡

Our workshop on Saturday was nothing but awesome!!

We learned how to make reusable pads, and we have enough material to continue doing some more!!

The celebration and dancing was however cut short, due to heavy rain and most women prioritised to head home and continue cultivate their lands - understandable!!!

But we managed to do a fashion show and a little bit of traditional dancing before the rain came, so it was a very good day 🥰

Thanks to everyone who supported this day, is means a lot!!! 💕🧡💕

A little recap of January: School has started - we have new uniforms, making it confusing to see who is in which class, because everyone looks waaaay too small for their new classes (!!) 😅

We are back in school and term 1 is in full swing already. But we wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone who has contributed to our school lately. Contributions have come from Norway, Sweden, Netherlands and the US - to our (not so little) school in the Kenyan bush and that is simply amazing. 💚💚💚

Class 6 Graduation Trip!! 🤩🧡🙏🏼

A 7am pickup and the party started already on the bus, as always. We went straight to Naivas - on request of the students, they wanted to go and see a big supermarket. It’s a big change from the local shop in our village, which is a small hole in the wall-shop. This Naivas is around 1 hour 20 minutes away from the school.

After that it was time to visit our friends at @watamusnakefarm to learn about snakes, what to do and what not to do when encountering different snakes. They have welcomed us before and are always available to answer any questions when we see different snakes around our school and what to do.🙏🏽🐍

Then we had lunch at a restaurant before the highlight of the day: the beach 🤩🤩

As always - this whole day is pure joy. Everyone enjoys it and the students get valuable exposure.

We are gonna miss these guys a lot at Eco Moyo, but we’re happy to still be a part of their life with supporting them in their Junior Secondary education 🧡

Today is the International Day of Rural Women.

In rural Kenya, women carry much of the daily work — raising children, farming, collecting water, cooking and taking care of their families. Many never had the chance to go to school, and opportunities for paid work are still limited.

At Eco Moyo, we see the strength and resilience of women every day — from our dedicated staff who keep the school running, to the mothers who make sure their children attend class and the women in our Adult Literacy Club who are learning to read and write for the first time.

These women are creating change for themselves, their families and their community.

During our Girls Day on Saturday, our guest speaker reminded the girls and women that progress for women starts with education and equal chances. When they get the opportunity to learn and grow, everyone benefits.

We are happy and grateful for playing a part in this in our community, but we still have long way to go and we are not planning to stop 🩷

UN International Day of the Girl Child 🌸

On Saturday we gathered our girls and mothers to honour this important day — a celebration of every girl’s strength, voice and potential.

This year’s theme, “The Girl I Am: The Change I Lead,” reminded us that leadership comes in many forms. You don’t have to be a political leader to inspire change — every girl can lead in her own way, in her family, her school and her community. 💪🏾

We were joined by wonderful guest speakers who shared powerful messages about courage, self-belief and the difference each girl can make. 👊🏾

One of our grandmothers moved us deeply with a poem in true Giriama style, sharing her story of being married young and missing the chance to finish school. Today her grand daughter studies here at Eco Moyo — and she herself comes to learn how to read and write. Her wish is simple yet powerful: that her grand daughter will have the opportunities she never had. 💚

We celebrated with a colourful fashion show, a joyful catwalk of confidence — and of course lots of dancing! 💃🏽✨

Here’s to every girl — bold, brilliant and leading change in her own way. 💛

Our creativity lab🤩🤩🤩

We like painting, drawing, singing, jumping, rolling, playing guitar, recording music, modelling, storytelling ,role playing and everything in between.

Kids have fun as they glow and it’s always beautiful to see their inner bulb light on as they have fun learning and playing games.

The creativity lab has become a complementary space for learning through the curriculum as it supports other learning areas and offers different ways to instruct the kids and facilitate learning. 🖥️🎨🎭🎼🧩

It was a pleasure to finally have @barnasfredspris at Eco Moyo! 🩵💙

They have supported us with a few different projects over the years but they have always been our main sponsor for our porridge!! For many many years they have secured our students a nutritious breakfast every day 🫶🏼

So nothing was more fitting that they brought some sweets to give out to all the children - as you can see brought a lot of joy 😍😍

Can we please get a big round of applause for the four parents from our adult literacy class and the two Grade 3 learners who stood up and read out loud in front of everyone today at Eco Moyo!? 🌟

We celebrated World Literacy Day together with Grades 3–6 and our growing adult class, now 35 strong (31 women and 4 men).

We talked about the importance of literacy and how being able to read is more than a skill: it’s confidence, independence and a doorway to new opportunities.

We then spread out to read some short stories and we are so proud of the progress our learners are showing in reading!!

Term 3 is in full swing, we are busy-busy learning (and dancing and playing ofc) with only 8 weeks left of this school year we really need to make the most of it 🙌🏾☀️

Term 3 has officially started!! 🤩🤩

With only 9 weeks left of school in 2025 we have all the planes to make the most out of it.

Look how beautiful our school ground is after a VERY SUCCESSFUL RAIN SEASON! After last year’s drought this is a sight for sore eyes. The carpentry club have been busy painting tyres and building furnitures while the agriculture club have been busy planting both plants and maize.

- Eco Moyos first ever harvest of maize gave us 73KG!! Amazing!! 🌽🌽🌽🌽

Words of wisdoms from the walls in the special ed classroom: dream big, work hard, never stop learning & believe in yourself 👊🏼

From our closing day in April after term 1. The Kenyan school only runs for just under 9 months per year, making it crucial for us to give quality education and a safe space while we can.

In the future we would like to be able to keep our facilities open all year around to offer our children and youth a safe, meaningful place to be during the long school holidays.

Closing day term 2 🌟

For this closing day, we separated children and parents to hold an important workshop for the parents.

We were honored to welcome Kilifi County Children’s Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Wandera Apopo, along with Ngerenya Child Protection Volunteer Officer, Caxton Thaki.

They held a workshop with the parents covering:

- Children’s rights and their importance
- The value of education—especially for kids in Kilifi facing historic challenges within education.
- Responsibilities of separated parents, including ways for mothers to hold fathers accountable
- How to report child protection concerns
- Parents’ roles in supporting their children’s welfare

The children celebrated with traditional dancing, performances and special mentions.

Now its time for a well deserved break for everyone and the school reopens on August 26th — see you then!

Today at Eco Moyo, we celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent! 🌍✨

We shared the history behind this important day and highlighted trailblazing African women who’ve made their mark in politics, science, activism and the arts—showing our girls that they too can lead, create and inspire. 💪🏾🌟

To close the day, our girls took the stage with beautiful patriotic songs and traditional dancing 🎶💛

A powerful reminder: representation matters. Dreams are valid. The future is bright.

Today is World Environment Day 💚

Kenya faces a significant litter problem, particularly in urban areas, due to poor waste management systems and public awareness. Despite efforts like the plastic bag ban, illegal dumping and lack of proper disposal facilities continue to pollute streets, waterways and natural environments.

We had a day of cleaning up our school compound, talking about environment and made pledges to help our Mother Earth and the surrounding environment in our village 🙏🏾

Happy Madaraka Day 🇰🇪✊🏾

🇰🇪 Today we celebrate Madaraka Day — the moment Kenya took charge of its own destiny. On June 1st, 1963, Kenya gained internal self-rule from British colonial rule. It’s a day to honor the courage, unity and resilience of those who fought for freedom.

As this years Madaraka Say is on a Sunday, tomorrow will be a public holiday and the school is closed.

We have been busy creating a new library space 📚(pillows will follow shortly😄), our new study room (thanks to everyone who’s given us computers this year, we really needed them 💻💙) and we tackle erosion problems with Eco Moyo-coloured tyres and flowers 🌸🛞🌧️☔️

We celebrated World Happiness Day on March 20th 🤗

We asked the students ”What makes you happy” and the answers were mostly eating, playing, dancing, singing, watching TV, learning and friends.

No one said anything about having money, a big house or any possessions of any kind and we think that is very beautiful and it’s a reminder to all of us what really matters 🩷🧡

Did you know, that when Eco Moyo first started in Dzunguni, many kids had never attended school before, so we had massive age gaps in the same class. In class 6, we’ve always had students at the age of 12-16 years old.
Over the years, this has evened out and this year’s Class 6 is the first to be nearly the same age across the board! Smallest in size so far but undoubtedly the cheekiest class 6! 🤗
