Design of Multi-purpose building at Eco Moyo, Master with Meaning

A Master’s thesis from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) by Marie Eggen Norløff and Veronika Nyhus. The thesis is about the design of a multi-purpose hall at Eco Moyo Education Centre in Kenya. The hall is intended to accommodate sports activities, community events and student assemblies throughout the rainy seasons. The design proposal focuses on utilizing local construction methods and locally available building materials. The proposed design is a 14 x 22.8 meter footprint and consists of hollow cross-section members made of S235 steel. The roof has corrugated steel sheets and facilitates rainwater harvesting and installation of solar panels. The materials of the design result in a cost estimate of 117 000 NOK. Functional and aesthetic design solutions are implemented in the design proposal, and recommendations for a more effective, feasible and durable design follow. It is especially important to identify and prevent deterioration of the materials to ensure a long service life.

Technical and economical analysis of a rural microgrid, Master with Meaning

The analysis was done by NTNU students Anja Myhre Waitz and Kari Thorset Lervik in collaboration with IUG and Eco Moyo Education Centre. The purpose of the analysis was to propose a system design for a microgrid that delivers electricity to the school from renewable energy sources. Off-grid solutions with PV panels and batteries were the main focus. The analysis concluded that both clustered and non-clustered solutions provide high performance and acceptable investment costs. However, a clustered solution allows for gradual expansion and is therefore considered the optimal solution for power supply at Eco Moyo Education Centre.

Design of underwater waterstorage tank, Master with Meaning

Iver Nybø and Lukas Okkenhaug Hartnik, two students from NTNU studying building and environmental engineering with a focus on geotechnics and construction technology, delivered a Master with Meaning in spring 2022. They worked in collaboration with IUG and Eco Moyo Education Centre and conducted their fieldwork at Eco Moyo in Kenya. Their project aimed to improve water supply during longer drought periods by designing an underground water storage tank based on geotechnical, construction technical, and durability aspects. The design proposal was developed using local building materials and techniques. The results are based on a field study conducted during a trip to Kilifi in February-March 2022 and supported by an extensive literature study. A design proposal for a cylindrical underground water tank with a capacity of 100 m3 was established.
